The internationally renowned Early Music Festival, which began in 1982, takes place each year at the Muziekcentrum Vredenburg and other venues around Utrecht. Key events of the festival include the Early Music Market.
The event features more than 100 concerts by renowned artists and ensembles. Festival-goers can enjoy performances of choral, devotional and chamber music from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Baroque and Classical periods. The 2006 programme focuses on the theme New Music in 16th century Italy.
The 25th anniversary of the Holland Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht. 25 years of the best artists, in programme's that are often unique for the Netherlands, and especially this year, premieres for the modern world. And what a celebration it was! The Festival lasted one day longer than usual, featuring three performances of the Festival production l'Ipermestra (with Mike Fentross and Wim Trompert), thus allowing the audience to immerse itself the whole day in the music of the Italian Seicento. But the Festival ventured beyond the music. An authentic Italian restaurant run by the culinary team of Genovese chef Fausto Cavanna provided just the right atmosphere. Evening after evening, all tables were taken.
